The Centre for Women’s Studies is a statutory body of the University of Kerala and has units in affiliated colleges for its functioning. The aims of the Centre for Women’s Studies are the empowerment of girl students and the improvement of their status, particularly in respect of education, health and economic opportunities. The girls need to be empowered in order to become strong and ready to take up new challenges for the building up of the family, society, nation and the world at large after their studies from colleges.

The student enrollment of our college is above 2500 in which about seventy percent are girls. The centre for Women’s studies in our college namely Thanal is functioning well since its inception and has two units in order to accommodate the whole female students. The activities of the units are co-ordinated by two conveners Dr.S Jayanthy and Prof. Sreelekshmi H.G and have been organizing various programmes for making girls aware of the challenges they face in a world in which women and men have equal rights and opportunities in all stages of their lives. Every year an orientation programme for newly admitted degree students is conducted to make them aware of the campus life.

In this context Thanal has successfully organized many women empowerment programmes such as seminars on gender equality in society, Drug abuse, dowry as a social evil, skill development etc. Also the International Women’s day was celebrated jointly with Kerala State Women’s Commission, Kerala State Youth Commission and department of Social Justice, Govt. of Kerala. Smt. Rosakutty teacher, Chair person Kerala state Women’s Commission and Kumary Chinta Jerome, Chairperson, Kerala state Youth Commission were inaugurated various programmes organized by Centre for Women’s Studies. A poster competition was also organized as part of Women’s day celebrations and students actively participated in it. As a part of Bodhi seminar series of our college, the Women’s studies centre organized a Seminar on Women empowerment -Emerging Trends and Challenges which was inaugurated by the Hon. Judge Smt. Sunitha Vimal, Industrial Tribunal and ESI Court Kollam. A programme on three days Self defense practice session for girls students in association with Kerala State Police department women’s wing. Anti drug awareness programmes conducted in collaboration with Kerala state Excise Department.
