OBSERVATION OF INTERNATIONAL BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY DAY
International Day for Biological Diversity is observed on 22 May to create as well as enhance understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. According to Convention on Biological Diversity, World Biodiversity Day was started at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 1993.
Theme of Biological Diversity Day 2020
The theme for the International Day for Biodiversity 2020 is “our solutions are in nature.”
The UN recognises that despite all technological advancements, humanity is completely dependent on a healthy and vibrant ecosystem for water, food, medicines and other essentials. The theme stresses on hope, solidarity and the importance of working together at all levels to build a future that is in harmony with nature.
The biodiversity club and Department of Botany jointly organized one day webinar on the topic “The Art of Utilising Floral Diversity” on 22nd May 2020. The formal inauguration of the Webinar was done by Dr. K.S Anilkumar, Principal, K.S.M.D.B College. The inaugural session was started with prayer followed by welcome address by Smt.Dhanya S.R, Coordinator, Biodiversity club. She explained the relevance of Biodiversity conservartion and theme of Biodiversity Day 2020. Dr. Geethakrishnan Nair.P (HOD, Dept.of Botany) delivered the presidential address. In the inaugural speech, Dr. K.S Anilkumar , Principal, K.S.M.D.B College mentioned the importance of Biodiversity conservation. The Key note address was delivered by Smt.Devipriya .D, Asst.Professor in Botany, S.N College Kollam and she spoke about theme of 2020 and floral diversity and created awareness on how sustainably managed and conserved floral diversity . Dr. Jayasree .V , IQAC Coordinator offered felicitation to the Webinar.
OBSERVATION OF WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY
The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) annually organizes events for World Environment Day, which encourages worldwide awareness and action for the protection of the environment. It is celebrated on 5 June every year.
Theme of World Environment Day 2020
The theme for World Environment Day 2020 is, 'Time for Nature,' with a focus on its role in providing the essential infrastructure that supports life on Earth and human development. This focus is expected to provide an opportunity for driving the momentum and public awareness of nature and its conservation.
The biodiversity club and Department of Botany jointly organized one day webinar on the topic “Sustaining Our Food Supply” on 21st June 2020 in connection with World Environment Day celebration through Zoom platform. The formal inauguration of the Webinar was done by Dr. K.S Anilkumar, Principal, K.S.M.D.B College. The inaugural session was started with prayer followed by welcome address by Smt.Dhanya S.R, Coordinator, Biodiversity club. She explained the importance of ecosystem conservartion and theme of World environment day 2020. Dr. Geethakrishnan Nair.P (HOD, Dept.of Botany) delivered the presidential address. In the inaugural speech, Dr. K.S Anilkumar mentioned the importance of conservation of nature. The Key note address was delivered by Dr. Sajitha Biju, Scientist, School of Agriculture and Food, University of Melbourne, Australia and she spoke about Sustaining food supply and created awareness on how sustainably managed food security. Dr. Jayasree .V , IQAC Coordinator offered felicitation to the Webinar .Vote thanks delivered by Smt. Lisa Pavithran. Around 200 participants comprising a blend of students, Research Scholars and faculties from various institutions attended the webinar from different states of India.

As a part of environmental day celebrations of this year, Biodiversity club members planted many plants in their own home due to the pandemic conditions. Various competitions usually conducted by Biodiversity club was not done due to the existing Covid 19 pandemic conditions.
WORLD WETLAND DAY CELEBRATION – FEBRUARY 2 nd 2021.
"Wetlands and Water" is the 2021 theme for World Wetlands Day, celebrated each year on 2 February. Wetlands are among the most diverse and productive ecosystems. They provide essential services and supply all our fresh water. Wetlands are land areas that are saturated or flooded with water either permanently or seasonally. Inland wetlands include marshes, ponds, lakes, fens, rivers, floodplains, and swamps. Coastal wetlands include saltwater marshes, estuaries, mangroves, lagoons and even coral reefs. Fishponds, rice paddies, and saltpans are human-made wetlands.
A Plantation Drive initiative by Biodiversity club and Department of Botany, has been successfully completed in the College Medicinal Garden on the occasion of world wetland day celebration. Almost 15 varieties of medicinal plant saplings including rare plants has been planted inside medicinal garden of the college

The formal inauguration of the Webinar was done by Dr. Mini Chandran.C, Principal, K.S.M.D.B College. The inaugural session was started with prayer followed by welcome address by Smt.Dhanya S.R, Coordinator, Biodiversity club. She explained the theme of World environment day 2021. Dr. Geethakrishnan Nair.P, HOD, Dept.of Botany delivered the presidential address. In the inaugural speech, Dr. Mini Chandran.C ,Principal, K.S.M.D.B College mentioned the importance of conservation wetland ecosystem. The Key note address was delivered by Dr. Beena Lawrence, Associate Professor, Department of Botany, Women’s Christian College, Tamil nadu and she spoke about mysterious flora and created awareness on conservation. Dr. Jayasree .V , IQAC Coordinator offered felicitation to the Webinar . Dr. Deepa.S, DBT STAR coordinator also delivered felicitation to the Webinar. Vote thanks delivered by Smt.Lekshmy Sreekumar. Around 100 participants comprising a blend of students, Research Scholars and faculties from various institutions attended the webinar from various parts of South India.
